Ladies U18’s Put In Huge Shift Against Medway

The U18s girls travelled to Priestfields for their first cup match of the season against Medway and they travelled with only 17 out of the possible 23 players due to injuries.

However from the start the 17 took control themselves, led by Sally Williams who was captain for the day. With their coach delayed they started the warm up themselves and clearly identified areas of skill to correct and work on. The levels of commitment and ownership carried through the whole day. Head Coach Paul said “It was brilliant to see and hear the girls self-analyse and identify areas to correct during the game. For me the biggest positive of the day.”

From the start the defence from Medway was strong and a few early overlaps went unused but eventually the ball got to the wing and Phoebe Leach went over for a try in the corner and that score set the scene for the rest of the game, good forward play with backs running onto the ball.

Both teams put up a strong defence but TWRFC scored four tries through the forwards with Sally Williams and Millie Rabbit having a brace each, the outside backs not to be outdone scored five with three to Catherine Davis, one to Jemma-Jo Likins who also converted six and of course the first try mentioned from Phoebe Leach.

During the week the squad had worked on ‘exits’ from a restart and they put this to great use allowing them to play rugby in Medway’s half, put pressure on them and ultimately score. There were chip and catches, inside passes, ‘fast hands’, some big tackles, some great turn overs and some great support play.

The game highlighted things to work on, rucks and clearing out the ball, identifying overlaps and listening to our wingers as they saw these overlaps, line outs etc. These will be the focus of training sessions in the coming weeks which should give the squad a massive lift through the season.

Special mention to Alice Atkins who, having been away for a while, did not show any rustiness during the game, nearly scored off her first touch and was always looking to keep the ball alive.

Well done all, things to work on but an excellent cup result.

#A21 shine against Dartfordians

Fantastic display of girls rugby today with the TWRFC & Sevenoaks U15 girls, the #A21,  playing Dartfordians in their league match at Sevenoaks in perfect rugby conditions.

A massively strong start saw #A21 new girl Mary score out wide from outside centre, after some strong forward play and good backs hands.

Same again a few minutes later with winger Molly doing similar.

Then Scrum-Half Faith scored her first try putting one between the posts after a phased attack. Iona added the two.

The half finished with a Darts counter attack making it 17-5.

The second half started with more swaps of players giving everyone as fair a crack as we could. Dart took great advantage of this and ran in three tries, but only after FlyHalf Iona planted one between the posts after a run from her own 10m line….and added her own two.

With Darts getting close, a concerted effort by tired bodies drove the Darts back in a ruck & maul festival ending with Oaks No8 Hannah going over.

The #A21 kept the pressure up until the last blow of the whistle, finishing 29-20.

Special mentions to Molly who stormed back after 5 weeks injury layoff, and Rosie who played her first game and fitted in perfectly.

Also welcome back Maddie who played a stormer on the wing, and stepped into the second row to help out in the last 5mins and “proper loved it”,

The win rounded off Head Coach Simon’s birthday weekend (we won’t say how old), also making up for Saturdays World Cup disappointment. The squad also took time to celebrate with tomorrow’s birthday girl Nicola.

Tries: TW Mary Smith, Molly Bignell, Faith Adams +Iona Con, Iona Woodhouse +Con & Oaks Hannah Walton.

Other TW girls: Nicola Perry, Rosie Hewitt (new), Heather Croker, Maddie Steger, Belle Raine (VC), Kirsty Jones, Bella Sullivan, Daisy Glasheen

(Oaks shirts as we played at Oaks…Wells shirts when at Wells)

Mini Festival Huge Success!

As Typhoon Hagibis caused disruption in Japan, rugby continued at the Tunbridge Wells RFC mini’s festival.

81 teams from clubs across Kent, Sussex and South London, met to play fantastic rugby.

Despite the rivalry, the competitive spirit, the gut and determination showed by the players, they all shook hands afterwards and parted as friends in rugby

Over 850 players enjoyed their experience, playing to the best of their ability, striving to deliver the best they could.

There were teams in attendance with insufficient numbers to make a complete squad, but they still got to play games.  Teams were created from multiple clubs to create a barbarian squad, where the players demonstrate the ultimate level of sportsmanship and put aside their club allegiances to ensure everyone can play.

Across the age groups rugby was played, children had fun and parents cheered.

The Festival, sponsored by NFU Mutual, was the first mass run out for the new team kit and some of our sponsors from Countryside, Bethany and HR Revolution were able to come alone and watch some great rugby.

Huge thank you to Alex and his team of coaches and volunteers for arranging a great day of rugby

Life After TWRFC Ladies

TWRFC Ladies are excited & proud to see the latest two girls playing rugby as adults.

Last weekend saw ex-U18 Amelia Marshall & her sister Emily ran out for Exeter Athletic Ladies in their 25-24 win against Bude Ladies.

Amelia was praised for her work rate, technique & style of play in training by coach Amy Garnett, England Women’s ex-captain & most capped hooker…a compliment too for Tammy & Milo who coached the U18s during her time with us.

With others ex-players now playing for Harlequins & Richmond Premiership sides and more having played or are still playing for Cambridge, Oxford Brooks, Warwick, Nottingham & Southampton Universities, our legacy is looking very good. Not bad for a section that’s only in its 6th season!!
(Okay, Emily never played for the club but trained & worked hard with us over the last 2 summers, caught the rugger-bug and is now hooked)

Next weekend (25th-27th Oct) see 34 of our girls (with 17 coaches & parents) go on Tour to Bath & Bristol. In a packed weekend they will get some coaching from ex-England player & Exeter’s Womens Team Head Coach, Susie Appleby, as well as being the Guard of Honour for Bath v Exeter in the Rugby Premiership at the Rec on Friday and Bristol Bears v Richmond Women in their Tyrrells Premiership match on Saturday….hopefully seeing ex-TWRFC Ladies Rosie Dobson representing Richmond that day.

More exciting things coming for TWRFC Ladies that will need your help & support so stay tuned!!

Brains Over Brawn

On Friday night, the Ladies section hosted a quiz at the Cross Keys pub to raise funds for their tour to Bath.

Around 60 people pitted their brains against quiz master Ioana Platts-Mills with Team Pinky and the Brains coming tops.

The quiz night raised a total of £898! A fantastic result. This will be added to almost £600 from cake sales at the club and £1700 raised by girls U13 coach Tammy Samuel running a marathon earlier this year.

Thanks also to Stephenson Harwood LLP and Zuber Design Architects for sponsoring the tour hoodies.

Girls from age 11 to 18 will benefit from these funds on the tour which takes place from 25-27 October.

Special thanks to all of those who baked cakes, bought cakes, donated wine and chocolate, bought raffle tickets and otherwise donated their time and money.

Rugby Club Scrubs-up Nicely

The second TWRFC Summer Ball was held at the High Rocks on Saturday 28th September.

The Summer Ball, attended by over 135 people from across the club; youth, seniors, vets and club members, was a true example of the oneTWRFC ethos in action. The evening included a raffle, “Heads & Tails”, auction and some very creative dancing – especially towards the end of the evening!

A key part of the club’s event calendar, the Summer Ball was an opportunity for people to enjoy a great night out but also raised over £9,000 for the club.

The club has already seen benefits from the three year plan with improvements in club house audio visual, pitch side PA and gym set up. Funds raised at the Summer Ball will contribute to further improvements. This includes ground floor catering (working title: Nick’s Cafe) facilities that will improve the club for all members, visitors and also the wider community.

Numerous reports of sore heads at Youth Section training the next morning have yet to be substantiated.

FUTURE DATE Youth Spring Ball 2020 Date TBC!!

SAVE THE DATE Summer Ball 2020 will be on Saturday 26th September!!

Huge thanks to:

Michelle Greenall and team for managing the event

The team at High Rocks – great food and excellent service

Tim McCabe & Steve Daly (TWRFC’s very own Ant & Dec) for MC’ing the event
